Not Every Day Is the Same for Every Family
Within Pitru Paksha, certain days carry special meaning. Maha Bharani is considered auspicious for all ancestors, Matru Navami is observed for departed mothers, and Ghata Chaturdashi is traditionally kept for those who passed away through untimely or accidental deaths.
Sarva Pitru (Mahalaya) Amavasya closes the fortnight and is observed for all ancestors, including those whose tithi is not known. Outside Pitru Paksha, every Amavasya is traditionally suitable for tarpana and shraddha.

When is Pitru Paksha?▼
Pitru Paksha is the waning fortnight of Bhadrapada in the South Indian calendar, usually falling in September or October. In 2026 it ran from September 26 to October 10. Outside the fortnight, shraddha, Tripindi and Pinda Daan can still be performed on Amavasya days or on the tithi of the ancestor through the year.
Which day should my family choose?▼
It depends on the ancestor and the circumstances. Traditionally, days such as Maha Bharani, Matru Navami (for mothers) and Ghata Chaturdashi (for untimely or accidental deaths) carry special significance. Call Guruji to confirm the right day for your family.
What if I do not know the tithi on which my ancestor passed away?▼
Sarva Pitru (Mahalaya) Amavasya, the last day of Pitru Paksha, is traditionally observed for all ancestors, including those whose tithi is unknown. Outside the fortnight, Guruji can advise a suitable Amavasya.
Should I perform Narayana Bali or Tripindi Shraddha?▼
Narayana Bali is generally performed for untimely or unnatural deaths, while Tripindi Shraddha addresses ancestors of the last three generations. Some families need both. This is best decided on a call after Guruji understands your situation.
Who needs to be present for the ritual?▼
The karta (main performer) should ideally be present in Gokarna. Other family members are welcome to join. If travel is impossible, ask Guruji about Sankalpa being done in your name.
How much does it cost?▼
There are no fixed packages. The dakshina depends on the rituals advised, number of priests, days and materials. Guruji will explain it personally on the call.
How early should I call?▼
Pitru Paksha is the busiest period of the year in Gokarna, and its most significant days fill quickly, so call well ahead for those. At other times of the year a suitable day can usually be arranged sooner.
